The Top 5 Poker Books

Top 5 Poker Books

Poker takes a lifetime to master, but this list of The Top 5 Poker Books will certainly set you on your way to becoming a better poker player and any advantage on the tables means more money. Once a player begins to think they are at a stage were they do not need to learn or remind themselves of the basics, the odds are they will become a losing player. There are way too many good poker books out there to put in to a short list, so no excuses. I have read loads of poker books and here are the ones I think are the most useful:

1. Theory of Poker by David Sklansky.

This book well and truly deserves 1st place and it is an essential read for any poker player. If you haven’t got it already then don’t even think about it, just do it. This book showcases many strategies and theories, it will teach you the fundamentals and give you the power to own those tables. There’s no doubt that this is one of the most respected books on Poker ever written.

2. Elements of Poker by Tommy Angelo

This is another great book that deserves it's place. It goes way beyond whether to raise, call, or fold and it will undoubtedly improve your game. The book will be suitable for all skill levels whether your just starting out playing poker or you would consider yourself a pro. Tommy's book is pure win start to finish, if you're serious about your game this is the book for you. This been said if you are starting out then the book contains very little on basic hand statistics and analysis.  What it does contain is a unique perspective on poker, which provides useful information on how to control yourself at the tables and having that poker mind set at the tables.

3. Poker for Dummies by  Lou Krieger

This was my first ever poker book and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to clarify the rules of poker. Though do not be fooled by the title, this is by no means just for beginners, it covers the fundamentals of cash games and tournaments, from betting strategy, card statistics, poker etiquette and the important aspects of position on the table. Bottom line is it's a must have read before plunging into the gigantic library of poker books.

4. Professional No Limit Hold Em by Ed Miller

In our opinion this is the best book on NL cash games on the market. It thoroughly explains what is meant by planning your hand and manipulating the pot size to your advantage. The information is presented in a simple, concise and is structured in a way that even if you are fairly new to the game you will understand. Although this been said, this book isn't for the absolute beginner. It does assumes a very basic level of poker knowledge which can be found on our blog. This is a certainly a book to go on the shelf.

5. Harrington on Hold 'Em 1 & 2.

Yes, this is technically 2 books but they are both equally as good as each other. This book focuses on Poker tournament play. It has a different 'style' from other books and discusses more in depth scenarios than other books I have read.  it runs down the difference between amateur and professional thinking. As a teacher, Harrington is a master and every page is crystal clear and easy to understand. To say that this is a must read for every serious hold em tournament player doesn't do it justice. Even if you are a very experienced  no limit tournament player, this book will help you think and win money.
